Sonoma Triathalon and off to Hawaii

Fantastic to get out of Los Angeles and up to SF to see Julia. The house was full. Michael with his new girlfriend Tonia, Simon and Alex, Mark and Debbie. It proved to be interesting chemistry.

On Sunday Julia took part in the Napa sprint triathalon. She was amazing and found the morning a breeze as did Michael and Mark. Congrats to all!!!

Monday headed off to the airport. Really enjoyed spending time with Mark and Debbie. But was pleased to be away from Sonoma as it was like being with a bunch of kids back at boarding school.

Long days travel. SF - LA - Hawaii. Picked up hire car and headed off across the Island on a nightmare journey. The big island is dark, real dark. There were very few streetlights and for the route we chose, very few roadsigns. Decided to head through the heart of the island through saddle pass. Half way along a sign said the road was closed and it turned into an unpaved track. We did continue and the road was in fact not closed, but we did read in the guide book that only 'a fool drives this route at night'. One consolation and a definite highlight of the next few days - Lava 105.3 FM with Eddie O reading out the weather and a host of 60s 70s and 80s tunes.

We hired a little cottage in Kapoho a few metres from a seres of rock pools which lead out into the ocean. It was lovely and simple. The owner ensured that teh house was full of orchids when we arrived.

Headed off to Punalu'u a black sand beach famous as a feeding ground for turtles. I tested my new under water housing for the camera and swam with the turtles. It was a cool overcast day so I was the only one in the water. What I will do for a photo!

Visited the Volcano National Park. Amazing!
