Morning kicked off with a session on set procedures run by Betsy Polock and Stephen Lighthill. Dean Mandel joined the team for the second half to give an indication of the process from the Director's view point.
Had lunch with Jonathan Cohen, Screenwriter. He is from British Columbia married to an American lady. Over the weekend I read a short script of his along with a piece of narrative prose. Interesting work.
Production meeting to iron out potential problems. The 'boot camp' scene will be shot with limited lighting equipment, on a location at the AFI, with two actors chosen from headshots only. Editing is limited to one day. It's designed more as a technical exercise but as you can imagine, it's the first thing people see at the AFI so students get a little worked up over the implications. We have been lucky and given one of the classrooms to shoot in. Some of the teams are having to stage in door scenes out in the school's grounds. A real test of the suspension of disbelief!
Afternoon met up with John Patterson who will be playing Steve on the 'bootcamp' scene. John currently works at the Arclight Cinema in Hollywood spending his free time on acting lessons, showcases etc.
Afterwars went through a rudimentary blocking of the scene with Sophie and Jeff in our classroom. Decided to fire off a few photos to cover the session. Seems like Sophie and Jeff could take up a second career in front of the camera - some fine visual performances here. Oscars to follow.
In the evening Stephen Lighthil held a screening of 'Cinematographer Style' featuring interviews with over a 100 working cinematographers ranging from Roger Deakins, Caleb Deschanel, Vitorio Storaro, and Stephen Lighthill. Big cheers when he popped up.
Evening spent writing up a shot list and reviewing the script of the Apartment for a Directing class with Dean Mandel on Tuesday.
